Short answer: a standard case of wine holds 12 bottles of 750 ml, or 9 liters total. Shipping boxes also come in 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, and 9-bottle sizes, and larger formats like magnums need their own shippers.

What about other bottle sizes?
- Half bottles (375 ml): smaller and lighter, but standard 750 ml inserts are sized for full bottles, so half bottles will be loose in them.
- Magnums (1.5 L): equal to two standard bottles and too large for standard inserts. Use dedicated magnum shippers; our three-bottle magnum foam shipper holds three.

Shipping boxes vs. storage boxes
Shipping boxes and storage boxes both hold bottles, but they're built for different jobs. Shipping boxes use protective inserts (molded pulp, foam, air cushions, or corrugated wraps) designed to survive carrier handling. Wine storage boxes use dividers or folding partitions to organize bottles on a shelf or in a cellar and aren't meant for parcel shipping.
Choosing the right box size
- Match the box to the bottle count. Empty slots let bottles shift and waste money on dimensional weight.
- Standardize on a few sizes. Many wineries stock 1, 3 or 4, 6, and 12 to cover most orders. Three-bottle trays can build 3, 6, or 12-bottle shipments from one SKU.
- Consider weight. A full case of wine is heavy, commonly 30 to 40 pounds packed, depending on the bottles. Smaller boxes are easier for customers and warehouse staff to handle.
