Wine Shipping Box Compatibility: Which Bottles Fit Which Shippers?
One of the most common questions wineries have when ordering wine shipping boxes is whether a particular shipper will fit their specific bottle shape and size. Not all bottles are the same, and not all shippers fit all bottles. Here's a practical guide to getting the right fit.
Why Fit Matters
A wine shipper that doesn't properly fit your bottles is almost worse than no shipper at all. If there's too much space, bottles can move and knock against each other or the box walls. If the fit is too tight, you may crack bottles inserting them. The goal: a snug fit with zero play in any direction.
Common Wine Bottle Profiles
Bordeaux (Cabernet, Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc)
Straight-sided bottles with high, defined shoulders. This is the most common wine bottle profile. Most standard wine shippers are designed for Bordeaux-style bottles.
Fits: Standard molded pulp wine shippers in all configurations.
Burgundy (Pinot Noir, Chardonnay)
Wider body with a gradual slope to the shoulder — noticeably wider than Bordeaux. Burgundy bottles do NOT fit in standard Bordeaux shippers. You need a shipper specifically sized for Burgundy bottles, or a shipper with a larger diameter cradle.
Check before ordering: Oregon Pinot Noir, Burgundy-style Chardonnay, and many New World Pinot producers use this profile. Always verify before ordering in quantity.
Champagne/Sparkling
Similar width to Burgundy but heavier glass with a deeper punt. Sparkling wine bottles need shippers rated for the extra weight and the wider profile.
Important: Champagne bottles under pressure are sensitive to rough handling — fit precision is critical.
Riesling/Alsatian (Flute)
Tall, narrow flute-style bottles common in German and Alsatian wines. These fit differently than standard Bordeaux or Burgundy shippers — verify dimensions.
Port and Dessert Wine
Often in shorter, slightly wider bottles. Check against shipper dimensions before assuming a standard shipper works.
How to Verify Fit Before Ordering in Quantity
- Measure your bottle diameter at its widest point
- Measure bottle height
- Request a sample shipper and test fit your actual bottles before placing a volume order
- Check that the bottle seats firmly with no movement in any direction
- Verify the top cradle holds the bottle neck snugly without forcing
